QUARKS OF THOUGHT

THE LITTLE THINGS? THE LITTLE MOMENTS? THEY AREN’T LITTLE

-       JOHN KABAT- ZINN

Quarks are said to be the smallest things that exist in the universe. Today, I am not going to talk about quarks. I am going to talk about the things that are a part of our life so much so that we ignore them. We never see them and that is not because of lack of observation but because we are so caught up in the big things that we tend to overlook them. The small things that CAN  add happiness to our lives but only if we savour them. Now the big question is what are these diminutive? Although this is a very subjective idea. These things can vary from person to person but some instances are: Waking up and realising it is a sunny day, watching and appreciating the beauty of nature, helping someone, smiling at a stranger, spending some time alone, and introspecting your day, laughing at old memories. It is noticing and appreciating things and movements that make up the fabric of our lives.  We are so busy in our fast-paced lives that we never tend to look at these things.

This Covid19 period, when we were locked up in our homes gave us a chance to stop and realise that these things even exist. This was a loud message from nature that the materialistic things that we run after have no use in difficult times, what matters are these small moments, all of us spent time with our families doing things we would have never done if this lockdown was not imposed on us, things like cooking, playing and understanding each other. It is often said that “ small things can make a big difference “ this is one of the notions that I am sure all of us have heard but never tried in our lives. We will be able to do this only when we stop and start to savour these iotas of things. This will not only bring happiness but also teach us to find hope in the smallest moments. If we look around then so many people have the best of lives but still, they are not happy. Nowadays we look for great things to be happy, but one can not always have great things. There are ups and downs in life, you can never always have great days so it is important to find the light, even in the darkest days.

It is hard to believe but according to many interviews, One of the richest and busiest man on this earth Bill gates feels in the seventh heaven when he spends time with his children. Who could’ve imagined that a person as busy as Bill gates would feel the happiest spending time with his children. The Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani his “comfort foods” include simple dishes such as rice, dal (lentils), and chapattis. Even miss universe Harnaaz Sandhu likes to play chess with her family in her free time. The Missile man of India Abdul Kalam liked to play Veena and walk in his free time. I have quoted people, from different fields who have achieved so much fame, respect, and money but still believe in the power of these small moments. They have faith in the tradition of “ take time to smell the roses”. I think it's high time that we also start enjoying the small moments. And remember this quote.

“WHEN YOU ARISE IN THE MORNING, THINK OF WHAT A PRIVILEGE IT IS TO BE ALIVE, TO THINK, TO ENJOY, TO LOVE “

-       MARCUS AURELIUS

Very true. In this worldly endless rat race, we actual forget to enjoy small movements which we’re giving us peace and enjoyment earlier. COVID is nothing but a message from nature to human being to realise this fact. Stay blessed always👍❤️

This write up surely prompts us to define categorical dichotomies between our professional/academic engagements and personal life in order to ensure a wholesome and peaceful life stay!

I completely agree with you on your concern that in our busy lives, we often overlook several small things which could have made us happy. Being a photographer, I have learnt to find serendipity in simple things which we don't pay attention to. During the lockdown, I used to go to the terrace of my house and experience sunsets while talking to my friends or while walking. Looking at the different shades of the sky in the evenings made me question a lot of my life choices. Then I became more conscious of how and where I would spend my time on. It is indeed serendipity which gives meaning to life. Even in romantic relationships, the small efforts put by the partner on a day-to-day basis matter more than a few grand gestures.
Keep it up, good work!
